I miss this car so much. I was driving home from work in December 2010 when I heard, felt, and smelled what seemed like a small explosion underneath me. It was the driveshaft bursting through the transmission housing.
The car limped off the highway, which was terrifying because the shifter jumped several inches with every revolution of the driveshaft and the car couldn’t go more than about 5-10mph. Paula picked me up and took me home.
Two days later we went back for the car. I knew it wouldn’t drive well, but I also knew that it would drive. I put the top down, the radio up, and enjoyed every minute of our 15 mile, hour-plus long ride home. The speedometer cable flew off at some point with the transmission going, so I can only estimate on how slow I was going. But we made it home.
I got under the car the next day and confirmed the damage would require more new parts and skill than I had available at the time.
I think that at this point, I have the skill to resuscitate the vehicle. The parts are relatively cheap on Craigslist, but it necessitates that I purchase the vehicle from my dad first for about $800. That’s the part I can’t swing right now.
Until I can, I’m just thinking about it.
